Our Story
STABLE’s Sustainability drive
In everything we do at STABLE we are conscious of our impact on the environment, our impact on human welfare and health, and our impact on our ability to help change buying and consuming habits.
1. We choose to design for sustainable living
When we approach the design for our accessories, clothing collections and home products, a driving guide is the longevity of the style. We aim to design for long-term use. Designs are classic, not trend-driven. We practice what we preach, buying less and more consciously, choosing quality over quantity.
2. We choose to make local
We work with our wonderful team of talented seamstresses in Ireland to make our accessories and clothing. These are a collective of multigenerational talented women who come from all corners of the world and have chosen Ireland as home. For our knitting and weaving, woodwork and other accessories for the home we work with both large and small makers across the island both north and south. Our friendships with the people we produce with is precious to us and we respect hugely the skills and integrity they bring to the STABLE offering.
3. We choose to use natural fibres
From the outset, we have always chosen natural fabrics and fibres. We work with 100% wool, linen, cashmere, alpaca, silk, cotton. Woven on the island where possible. Natural fibres are biodegradable and are healthier for us humans.
4. We choose to work with sustainably like-minded companies and individuals
Like attracts like. So it is no surprise we gravitate towards those individuals and companies that equally have the environment and human welfare focus to their business practices.
5. We choose to source our fabrics on the island of Ireland
Where it is possible to find production on the island of Ireland we will design and source our fabrics from Irish weavers and knitters.
6. We choose to use recyclable or biodegradable packaging
We continue to reduce the amount of packaging we produce for our store and online fulfilment. We choose locally sourced paper-based packaging and biodegradable cellophane.
Caring for your STABLE Products
Caring for our Linen
Linen is one of the best fabrics out there. Ireland’s impressive history as part of it’s respected reputation globally is just one of the many reasons it features so largely in our collection. It’s fine quality feels like a feather to the skin and it’s make up is anti-bacterial and breathable but will remain as good as new for years to come. As it is a natural fibre it stays kind to sensitive skin but also to the planet. Made from flax grasses, linen can be made biodegradable and sustainably. Flax also gives us healthy oils and flowers for the bees, bonus.
With little care linen will serve you well for many years to come and the more you wash it the softer it will become. Everyone loves their linen kept different ways but we recommend you wash linen at cooler temperatures, 30 degrees is generally good. To dry your linen, we like to dry naturally for an organic crease but for clean lines steam iron.
Caring for our Wool, Handwoven Herringbone, Fine Weave and Tweeds
All of our fine weave and large handwoven scarves are made from wool. Wool is a versatile 100% natural fibre and responds well to both washing and dry cleaning. We recommend that if you are comfortable washing your wool jumpers then treat your STABLE wool scarves in the same way. For all wool we recommend a wool wash cycle in your machine with appropriately low temperature and spin settings. Dry flat. Never tumble dry. If removing any creases use a low setting on your iron.
Caring for our Cashmere
Our STABLE cashmere is made to the highest standard on a state of the art knitting machine. We recommend that you wash your cashmere by hand with a gentle non bio detergent. Cashmere loves being washed and will get softer the more you do so. Always squeeze water by pressing rather than ringing out the item as otherwise you will stretch the fabric. Dry flat naturally.
Caring for our Alpaca Wool
The natural fibre is widely considered warmer and silkier than most other herd animals and often compared to cashmere. Alpacas do not produce lanolin, unlike sheep’s wool, which means it’s hypoallergenic and good for anyone who is a little sensitive to other natural fibres. Not only this, it really has minimal environmental impact in comparison too. They are only shorn once a year and require little processing to turn the fibre into a luxurious yarn. Their large hooves don’t pack down the soil and they graze lightly, not bothering trees. Altogether this makes alpaca wool one of the best examples of sustainable and eco-friendly wools out there, leaving few footprints on the planet. Dry clean or hand wash in cold water with non bio, dry flat,naturally.
