STABLE Celebrates
The Donegal Aran
The craft, art and skill of weaving baskets from willow and rushes has long been an Irish tradition borne out of necessity and resourcefulness. Irish country life of yore revolved around working with what was readily available around you from the land. Made local (a lively marketing campaign by DCCI to promote Irish made) was the only option for most families and communities. People made what they needed to create a home, feed and clothe themselves and farm.
The willow weaving for our baskets at STABLE is by our dear friend and expert Pauline Hogan, who has her home and workshop in Co Meath. A bright and brilliant mind, Pauline was always happier working with her hands and found her talent in working with willow. Trained by Ireland’s leading light in Basketry, Joe Hogan from Connemara, Pauline has honed her craft to now include leather straps and belts.
We met with Pauline to do a video interview a while back to chat all things willow and to learn more about how she started and why she loves what she does. A wise, funny, kind and smart woman, definitely worth watching!
